Computing

At Drapers’ Brookside the core of computing teaching and learning is Computer Science. With technology being a significant part of life in 21st Century Britain we believe that ‘computational thinking’ is a key skill that the children should be taught if they are to be able to participate effectively and safely in this digital world.

A high-quality computing curriculum gives the pupils the tools to use creativity to understand and change the world. We use a wide range of technology, including iPads, laptops and interactive whiteboards to allow the pupils to continually practise and improve the skills they learn. This ensures that the pupils become digitally literate so that they are able to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and computer technology.

Our Computing Curriculum Implementation

The skills and knowledge that the children will develop throughout each computing module are mapped across each year group and throughout the school to ensure progression. There is a focus on:

  • Using technology responsibly and safely
  • Developing computer literacy and using common core programmes
  • Appreciation of the wider aspects of computing, including patterns and coding

Key Skills

We teach a curriculum that enables children to become effective users of technology who can:

  • Understand and apply the essential principles and concepts of Computer Science, including logic, algorithms and data representation;
  • Analyse problems in computational term, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems;
  • Evaluate and apply information technology analytically to solve problems;
  • Communicate ideas well by utilising appliances and devices throughout all areas of the curriculum.
