Geography is used at Drapers’ Brookside to instil appreciation for the world around us, inspiring pupils to develop a life-long curiosity and fascination of the world and its people.

Our geography curriculum enables children to acquire a deep knowledge of diverse places, communities and environments, and challenges them
to think about how we can create a more sustainable future for our planet. Pupils are encouraged to use a broad spectrum of geographical ideas to discuss their ideas with confidence, and teachers employ a wide range of pedagogical strategies to facilitate and support creative learning, problem solving and inquiry. Our geography curriculum also aims to give pupils opportunities to use and interpret a wide range of geographical sources, including but not limited to maps, aerial photos and computer navigation software.
Our Geography Curriculum Implementation
Our geography curriculum is based on a progressive skills model, developed in collaboration with staff from EYFS through to Year 6. Children consider aspects of human and physical geography, starting with their local area and then broadening to national and international case studies.
With younger pupils, geography is taught explicitly but as they move to Key Stage 2 geographical concepts are taught alongside history where appropriate, for example children in Year 3 look at rivers alongside learning about Ancient Egypt.
